Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder, multi-billionaire and the wealthiest man on earth, recently announced that he was getting divorced from his wife of 25 years; MacKenzie. Thankfully, Jeff put out a statement that the separation was amicable, and that both were going their separate ways with no regrets. But given that Jeff has an estimated fortune of $137 billion; how much will the settlement cost him? And how long will it stay amicable, especially now that his new lover turns out to have been around a bit longer than originally believed, and his racy texts have made it to the tabloids!
Speculation is already rife that the outcome of the divorce could not only impact Amazon shares dramatically, but also, by extension, the economy of the whole United States. Marilyn Chinitz, a New York-based divorce attorney, has stated that how they decide to divide up the Bezos fortune is key to the far reaching ramifications on a larger scale. Though, given that Bezos is nothing if not a shrewd businessman, chances are he is well aware of this, and will act accordingly. Either way, the world, and economists, will be watching with bated breath to see how the divorce concludes, and who gets what.
In the case of these other settlements, however, the numbers can only make the average person gawk in disbelief. Take a look at the top 3 most expensive divorces in history – all of which are iron clad proof that a pre-nup is well worth the paper it is written on!

Bernie Ecclestone and Slavica Radić
Being a Formula 1 executive is certainly going to involve landing up with a fair amount of money in the bank. In the case of Bernie Ecclestone, enough to make you among the wealthiest in the United Kingdom. His marriage to Slavica Radić, a Croatian model, raised more than a few eyebrows, not only because she is 28 years younger than the Formula 1 tycoon, but because she is his second wife, with the age gap between him and his third wife being even bigger.
Slavica is said to have received a settlement of around $1.2 billion, although this incredible sum is only just the beginning of what appears to be a much more complicated issue, with Bernie actually getting the upper hand.
Rupert Murdoch and Anna Torv
The divorce between Murdoch and Torv is the stuff of legend, and could almost stand as the self-contained script for a soap opera. Murdoch, a world famous media mogul, handed wife of 31 years, Torv, a stunning $1.7 billion upon their separation. The shocker is that Murdoch was married again just 17 days later, to Wendi Deng, who also quickly divorced Murdoch, and got a healthy settlement all of her own. These are the days of our lives.
Alec Wildenstein and Jocelyn Wildenstein
The costliest divorce in history occurred in 1999, between Alec and Jocelyn Wildenstein. Although slightly less dramatic in details, it is the numbers that make this divorce one for the history books. Jocelyn was awarded, upfront, $2.5 billion. But that was just a start. She was awarded an additional $100 million for the following 13 years, totalling a grand total of $3.8 billion.
