2018 was a big year at the box office, with many blockbusters that set the silver screen alight and brought in the crowds. But what could 2019 possibly offer that could match the likes of Avengers: Infinity War, Deadpool 2, and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom? Why, a live action Pokémon film with Ryan Reynolds playing Pikachu of course. What, you’re think we’re joking? That’s just the first film on this list, and proof positive that 2019 is eager to outdo 2018 at the cinema.
Take a look at some of the most highly anticipated upcoming films of 2019 that will have you grabbing the popcorn!
This is that Ryan Reynolds-Pikachu film we were talking about, due out on May 10th 2019. It is looking to be a rather massive undertaking, and a bold attempt by Warner Brothers, Legendary Pictures and the Pokémon Company to get this still going strong franchise back into the mainstream. It is based on the 2016 video game of the same name, and will otherwise star Justice Smith and Ken Watanabe.
Yes, it does seem a little bizarre that the man now most commonly known as Deadpool is going to be providing the voice and facial capture for the beloved little yellow rodent creature, but take a look at the trailer and you might just be shocked to see that, well, it looks like Reynolds was born for the role. Which is to say; in this version, Pikachu actually gets to speak real words, beyond just repeating his name. We wait with bated breath for Detective Pikachu, and wonder if it will be the birth of a live action Pokémon franchise. Spoiler: probably.
Avengers: End Game
The Avengers franchise has not so much been going strong as it has been utterly dominating at the box office. Due out on April 26th 2019, Avengers: End Game will provide the much-anticipated conclusion to Avengers: Infinity War, which ended on a rather inconsiderate cliff-hanger. Yes, we were all left rather damp eyed at the final moment between Iron Man and Spider-Man as well.
All the expected cast will naturally be returning to reprise their roles, including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlet Johansson and all the rest. The film will be the conclusion to the breath taking; somewhat controversial story of mega-villain Thanos, but most certainly stand as just another step in the ongoing Avengers franchise.

The MCU, Marvel Cinematic Universe, is set to dominate the year again, with the introduction of yet another hero on March 8th, 2019. Captain Marvel will star Brie Larson, with Samuel L Jackson backing her up. The movie tells the story of Carol Danvers, an ex United States Air Force pilot that joins an intergalactic military force.
The film has seen a rocky development so far; lingering since as early as May 2013, until finally managing to achieve its March release date. Hopefully all those extra years mean another smash hit for the already astonishingly successful MCU franchise.
The Lion King
Disney seems to be striking gold with its live action remakes of classic animations, and is at it again with The Lion King. Due to hit cinema screens on July 19th 2019, many are already speculating if the film will do the beloved 1994 animation justice.
Not to worry though, some pretty spectacular computer animation is being used in this remake, as we’ve seen in the official trailer. A few very talented voices have also signed up to bring the animations to life, including Donald Glover, Seth Rogan, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and none other than Darth Vader himself; James Earl Jones.
2019 is clearly going to be the year of Disney and Marvel, with our last entry on the list being a live action remake of yet another animated classic, this time 1992’s Aladdin. Due out on May 24th, 2019, the official trailer is more than a little secretive, and eager to keep important details hidden. But what can be gleaned is that there will be plenty of sand, a spooky deep voice and a lamp, which all stands to reason. Also, a few brief notes of a popular song can be heard, which was probably enough to get many Disney enthusiasts smiling with nostalgia.
Details released by Disney reveal that the starring role will be filled by Mena Massoud, with Naomi Scott playing Princess Jasmine. Many were curious to see who would fill the shoes of the late Robin Williams as the Genie, and the majority agree that Will Smith was a pretty great choice. Fingers crossed for talking parrot!
