Oprah Winfrey become a billionaire back in 2003, and according to Forbes, her net worth is now US$2.9 billion. Having come from nothing, one of the greatest things about her is how much she enjoys her fabulous wealth. And that’s seen not only in her philanthropic efforts, but also in how she uses it to treat herself and others.
The Talk Show Queen
Oprah has her fingers in plenty of profitable pies these days, but the bulk of her net worth still comes from her incredibly successful talk show. Once the title of the show changed to use her own name and she syndicated it (on the advice of Roger Ebert) the money really started coming in.
OWN, or the Oprah Winfrey Network, was founded in 2011, and she is still Chief Executive Officer of the profitable broadcaster. She also bought Harpo Studios in 1988 and launched O, the Oprah Magazine and Oprah.com in the 1990s – all of which have been incredibly successful. In 2007 she sold Oxygen Media, another powerhouse that she helped to found, to NBC for $925 million.
Beyond being a media personality and producer, she has also earned major chops as an actress, And she’s a savvy investor too; she bought 10% of Weight Watchers in 2015 for US$43 million and, possibly due to attaching her name to the programme, her shares are now worth over $400. She sold some of them in March 2018, pocketing a cool $110 million.
Other revenue streams include the books she’s written, her work as a freelance journalist, making speeches and appearances, and endorsing products that she really believes in.
Goodies for Herself
Oprah is famously fond of life’s finer things, and gets a kick out of spending her well-earned fortune just like we do when we’ve won big playing at All Jackpots, the best online casino around! In 1991 she bought a private jet for US$42 million, after she had an unpleasant encounter with a rude person in an airport. And she has put it to good use.
Best Friend Gayle King is often her travelling companion, and together they have picked truffles in Umbria, gone clubbing in Ibiza with will.i.am, and spent some time glamping in Yosemite. They also traversed the United States in 2006, driving from Santa Barbara to New York in 11 days. Her jet is big enough to hold many passengers, and she once treated OWN staff to a vacation in Maui.
She’s also fond of buying art and designer clothes, as well as several beautiful pieces of real estate. To date, her property purchases around the world have totalled over US$100 million. That includes an estate in Maui, a primary residence in Montecito, California, and a Telluride, Colorado spot that is perfect for skiing getaways. Most recently, Oprah bought an estate on Orcas Island, Washington State, for around US$8 million.
A True Philanthropist
Even if they had a veritable gold mine at their disposable, most people wouldn’t be as generous with their money as Winfrey is with hers. The Maui trip was not the first time she’s taken her staff on holiday, and she’s also been known to pick up the bill for entire weddings.
Famously she once gave every member in her talk show studio audience a car, and in 2006 hundreds of fans got US$1000 gift cards to donate to the charity of their choice. In 2017 she said she had spend about US$140 million on the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, a school that she opened in South Africa in 2007.
Recently, Oprah is said to have donated US$100 million to the Time’s Up movement, a campaign aimed at ending sexual harassment. With a heart that is big enough to share all she has, it’s no wonder so many people are still hoping she’ll run for president.
