Thanks to medical advances and modern living, human beings are living longer than ever. We think that’s one of the great reasons to celebrate, just like playing responsibly and winning big at an online casino, because you have so much more time to get life right.
These days, if you’re in your thirties you’re a spring chicken and can use the decade to set yourself up for a fruitful life in the years that follow. Not sure where to start? We’ve listed a few ways that you can give yourself a boost.
Exercise and Sleep More
Let’s get the practical advice out of the way first. Exercise has all kinds of health benefits, and in your thirties you start losing muscle mass so regular physical activity becomes especially important. Pick something that you love to do, to give you your best chance of sticking to it.
Exercise will also help you get better-quality sleep, another vital component of physical well being. Aim for 7 to 8 hours a night to allow your body to really replenish and repair itself, but even more importantly, go to bed and wake up around the same time. Just a few days off a regular pattern can cause havoc with your biorhythms.
Define What is Important to You
Decide what your values are, so that you know what you want your life to look like. Create a list of your core principles and then try to whittle it down to the top 3. If your current job, home or other situations are not in line with these values, think about what you can do to make changes. Writing a personal mission statement can also help you outline who you want to be and what you want to do.
Be Happy with What You Have
In a nutshell, the secret to joy is to want what you get, not to get what you want. Express gratitude for all the pleasures and people in your life, as often as you can. Janice Kaplan, author of The Gratitude Diaries, found that her entire marriage changed when she started saying thank you to her husband regularly.
Pursue a Lifelong Dream
You should make it a priority to be satisfied with what you have, but it’s also important to keep reaching for your dreams. Time will go by no matter what you do, so why not spend it in pursuit of your goals? Write your goals down and put them somewhere easy to see to stay motivated, and then start thinking about what you need to do to buy a house, write a book, climb a mountain or achieve any other dream.
Forgiving yourself for your past failures is as difficult as it is liberating. The trick is to treat yourself with the same compassion as you would a friend, colleague or even a child when they made mistakes. Practice being compassionate with yourself – it takes time, but it is possible – and see how the world opens up.
Be a Happier Version of Yourself
All the suggestions we’ve made here will actually help you to be a happier person, and isn’t that ultimately the point? Who wants to go through life being unhappy? The pursuit of happiness is so important; it’s even in the United States Declaration of Independence!
Do whatever works for you. A lot of people say that when they hit their thirties they realised they would never please everyone, so they stopped trying to. If you can be kind to others as well as yourself, and find the simple joys in daily life while also looking towards the future, you’re well on your way.
