Six Famous Cheating Sport Heroes that we Love to Hate

Cheaters: Eventually they get caught

Everyone enjoys watching their favourite sports heroes excel in their arena. Almost as much as we enjoy watching them suffer for their transgressions. People need someone to love, but also someone to hate. Those someone’s? Famous people of course. We cheer for them when they do well and cry with them when they fail, and love to hate them when they are caught cheating.

When they have wasted our personal investment of time and energy and blind support, we will happily gather round the TV and watch them squirm form the reporters. Fans will forgive many things, but cheating? Well, that’s just unsportsmanlike. Here are some of the cheaters we love to hate.

Lance Armstrong

Lance Armstrong: A serial cheater

Armstrong, the winner of seven Tour de Frances’ was a cancer fighting, foundation founding, cycling hero the world over. Type his name into Google today and the search suggestions are Lance Armstrong’s testicle, and Lance Armstrong cheating. No mention of his Tour de France achievements. Lance was stripped of his seven TdF victories after being found guilty of doping and labelled as the ringleader of “the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen”. Well that’s something, at least. No ordinary doping scheme would have been good enough for this sporting hero.

Marion Jones

Not only was Marion an American world champion track runner but an accomplished basketball player as well. It was for the former for which she was stripped of her medals for banned substance use. It didn’t stop there though. Jones eventually got involved with check fraud and ended up spending 6 months in prison. So, the next time someone says that these substances are a gateway to other things, listen.

Renault F1 Team

Cheating takes Renault off the track

This one took some imagination. Who crashes into a wall in a F1 vehicle while hurtling through a turn on purpose? Nelson Piquet, that’s who. According to Piquet the Renault team had ordered him to crash to improve Alonso’s position on the track. It worked. Alonso came in first, but during the investigation the teams managing director and executive director of engineering left. Renault was given a disqualification from F1, which was suspended for two years.

It seems it really is not possible to cure stupidity.

Phil Ivey

Phil Ivey in better days

This famed Poker player was court ordered to pay back $10 million he had won while playing the casino game Punto Banco at Crockfords in London. The judge found the technique he had used, edge sorting, to be dishonest and was therefore cheating, and illegal.

Mike Tyson

Tyson- the man with the fake penis

Fake penis.

Yes, you read correctly, fake penis. That is how Mike Tyson hid years and years of illegal substance abuse during his career. With a fake penis. That’s not all, apparently one of his team members spent all that time walking around with someone else’s clean urine in the ‘whizzer’ so he could pull off this cheat. So much more fascinating than biting off someone’s ear.

Tiger Woods

Woods is a triple threat when it comes to his cheating talents. Having been accused of reported illegal substance use and treating the course rules with some flexibility. It turns out that his biggest problem is not on the course, but in the bedroom. But, it turns out it wasn’t a one-time thing. After his then wife, Elin Nordegren, took a swing at him with one of his clubs, it turns out that Tiger had made cheating a bit of a side hobby, and earned himself the title of serial cheater. His plight came to light when he crashed his car, and it seems as though the golf star has been plagued by problems ever since.
