Back in 1999 Time Magazine took it upon itself to end a debate conclusively. That debate centred on whom the most influential people in the world were currently. In order to give a solid answer, Time searched the globe, with those from all walks of life taken into consideration.
The American news magazine triumphantly published the final list with as much fanfare as when you win a big pokies jackpot, however “The List” was quickly enshrined in controversy. Despite being a major talking point that got many people’s backs up, this list skyrocketed Time’s sales and became a regular feature. Today, the list is still published annually to as much fanfare and controversy as before.
In 2019 Time once again explained that they look at those with far reaching influence, regardless of whether that influence is positive or negative. They also explained that how long that influence lasts is of major importance, disregarding those that make an impact only to be entirely forgotten years, or even months later.
Take a look at 5 names that are on the list this year, and see how you feel about their contribution to society:
Making the list as a Titan, Egyptian footballer Mohamed Salah is widely considered to be one of the best football players in the world, currently taking the role of forward for Liverpool in the English Premier League, while still maintaining a position in the Egyptian national team. An SAFP Golden Player award was snapped up in his debut season, which catapulted him into the spotlight and gained the attention of the Premier League. His signing with Liverpool in 2017 set a record for the most paid for a single player at the time, £36.9 million, although this record has since been broken.
With his best years still ahead of him Mohamed Salah will likely return to the Time 100 List in the future as his career grows from strength to strength.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is on the list in the Artists category. Starting out as The Rock in the professional wrestling scene, he quickly moved on to star in multiple Hollywood blockbusters. The moniker The Rock was soon dropped, and Dwayne Johnson is now a household name. With a leading role in the on going Fast and Furious franchise, there are few who don’t recognise him as one of the top talents in Hollywood today.
Beyond acting, Dwayne Johnson is well known for his charity work with the Dwayne Johnson Rock Foundation. His social media accounts, followed by millions, are acclaimed for delivering messages of positivity, and striving to achieve goals on a regular basis.
Democrat Nancy Pelosi is fittingly filed under Leaders on the list. According to popular opinion, her actions in the United States political landscape have had unquestioningly far reaching influence, more so than most other politicians. Many attribute her as the main reason that a Democratic majority returned to the White House in the 2018 mid-term elections. The diverse presence in Congress, more so than ever before in history, is also seen as largely due to her efforts. The passing of the new gun-safety law, the first in a decade, was likewise the work of this tireless woman.
Most encouraging of all is that Nancy Pelosi still has a long, bright future ahead of her in the world of United States politics. This is likely only the beginning of what will be an increasingly more influential presence, and probably not the last we will see of her on the Time 100.
Interestingly, singer and songwriter Taylor Swift didn’t feature under the Artists category, but under the Icons instead. She is a multi-Grammy award-winning artist and boasts a number of albums that have reached the number 1 position on the American charts. Although her influence is seen much further than the States, with millions of fans around the world that connect with her unique style of classic country inspired music. Perhaps what makes her most adored is that her songs lean towards telling narratives about her life, sharing personal journeys and struggles even as she enchants stadiums of tens of thousands with beautiful music. She is also an LGBTQ spokesperson and heavily promotes equality.
All of this and Taylor Swift has not yet even turned 30.
Canadian American actress Sandra Oh made it on to the 2019 Times Most Influential People List under the Pioneers category. She is most widely known for her praised role in Greys Anatomy, which ran from 2005 to 2014. Though she is seeing equal amounts of praise playing Eve Polastri in the spy thriller Killing Eve, which is still currently on air.
Oh has received a multitude of accolades for her outstanding performances, including four Screen Actors Guild Awards, two Golden Globes, and eight Emmy Award nominations.
Apart from her outstanding career as a thespian, Sandra Oh has been making waves with her opinions expressed on being a non-white actress in a still-difficult Hollywood industry, and has become a spokeswoman for equality.
