Carole Baskin Gets Joe Exotic’s Zoo

The latest chapter of the infamous feud between big cat enthusiasts turned reality TV stars Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin unfolded in the Western District of Oklahoma Federal Court recently.

In the outcome of a protracted legal battle documented on the hit Netflix documentary Tiger King, eccentric roadside zoo owner Joseph Maldonado-Passage, better known as Joe Exotic, has been ordered to hand over his property to conservationist and sworn enemy, Carole Baskin. This twist is as riveting as the action offered by online pokies, and once again throws the cat amongst the pigeons between the feuding pair.

Trademark Infringement

The basis for Baskin’s case is trademark infringement on the part of Maldonado-Passage back in 2013. At the time, he was convicted of using Baskin’s Big Cat Rescue Corporation’s logo and name to promote his own venue. Maldonado-Passage’s own G.W. Exotic was ordered to pay $1 million in damages to Big Cat Rescue.

The former then created an entirely new business entity, Garold Wayne Zoo in an attempt, according to Baskin, to dodge the ruling. Baskin subsequently sued Maldonado-Passage for this action. When the court ruled this new entity liable for the former judgement, Maldonado-Passage joined forces with fellow big cat park proprietor, Jeff Lowe to form yet another new business, Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park.

In the meantime, Maldonado-Passage was sentenced to 22 years in prison for two counts of attempted murder-for-hire, alongside several charges of animal abuse. Shortly before this, Maldonado-Passage found himself on the outs with Lowe over the management of their shared zoo.

Fraudulent Property Transfer

Once attempts to collect on the judgement turned to asset seizure, Maldonado-Passage’s mother and others assisted her son in transferring property ownership. In the case concluded on Monday, however, presiding judge, Scott L. Palk ruled that this transfer was fraudulent and therefore not binding.

Accordingly, Judge Palk ordered that Greater Wynnewood Development Group to surrender and vacate the park within 120 days.

Cats’ Fate Uncertain

While the judge ruled that the vacation of the 16.4-acre property is to include the removal of all zoo animals from the land, he was unclear about what should be done with these animals.

As such, it is not yet clear whether or not Baskin’s Big Cat rescue will be able to hold onto the cats. The Humane Society of the United States, which has been vocal in support of Baskin, has called for the transfer of the animals to proper sanctuaries to ensure that they will never again suffer at the hands of unqualified hucksters like Jeff Lowe and Joe Exotic.

Unofficial Comment

While neither Baskin nor Maldonado-Passage have yet officially responded to calls for comment on Monday’s ruling, both have aired their views on the situation via informal channels.

Maldonado-Passage, who has maintained his innocence and appealed his attempted murder and animal abuse conviction, took to Twitter on Tuesday to make his opinion known. At the same time, he voiced his support of the current worldwide protests against police brutality, saying that while Baskin taking his zoo was a real tragedy, he also stands with those who have been hurt and killed fighting for what they believe in.

Big Cat Rescue, meanwhile, previously stated on its website that the global health crisis and the alleged misrepresentation of Baskin and the park in Tiger King have delivered a “double punch” to the entity. According to the post, it is uncertain whether Big Cat Rescue will ever be able to open its doors to the public again and that it has to let go of 10 of its 20 employees and contractors.

Baskin alleges that the Netflix documentary underplayed the abuses of Maldonado-Passage’s animals and misrepresented her intentions. She claims that the show depicted her as an opportunist, rather than a conservationist concerned only with the cats’ welfare. According to Baskin, this misrepresentation has even led to death threats.

In support of Baskin, animal-rights activists have welcomed the latest court ruling. According to Humane Society of the United States chief executive, Kitty Block, the ruling finally brings the curtain down on the cruel operation known as G.W. Exotic. And, justice has finally been served for Carole Baskin and the accredited sanctuaries that put animal welfare first.

Jeff Lowe has, as yet, declined to comment on the ruling.

Success at Last: Iconic SpaceX Launch

SpaceX rocket launch

Elon Musk founded SpaceX (officially known as Space Exploration Technologies Corp.) just over 18 years ago. Ultimately, his vision is for the company to reduce the cost of travelling to Mars, thus allowing people to start colonising the Red Planet. At present, space travel is reserved for the professionals or the elite who have oodles of money at their disposal, just like those who win big playing online pokies. Now, with the successful launch of the Crew Dragon and its human cargo into space on Saturday 30th May, he is perhaps a little closer to realising this dream.

The Historic Launch

The Commercial Crew Demo-2 launch lifted off at 3:22 pm EDT from the Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Originally planned for Wednesday, 27 May, it was scrubbed because of unfavourable weather conditions. But with such a massive project, backup dates for 30th and 31st May were also scheduled. In the end, the second attempt went off without a hitch and millions of people watched it all happen via livestream. The next day, following thorough testing while in orbit, it docked at the International Space Station (ISS).

This is the first time human passengers have been launched into space from the United States of America (USA) since NASA (National Aeronautics Space Administration) retired its Space Shuttle back in 2011. Plans for a programme that would succeed the Space Shuttle were made, but financial and bureaucratic issues caused serious delays. Since 2011, then, the USA has been making trips to the ISS by sending astronauts up on Russia’s Soyuz rockets – at up to $86 million a seat.

With NASA beset by various challenges, a decision to prioritise the commercial space flight industry was taken. The result was the Commercial Crew Programme, which was also created in 2011. In 2014, after a series of open competitions by various companies, Boeing and SpaceX won the opportunity to fly astronauts from US soil. A race to make the first flight followed, and the SpaceX Crew Dragon craft was ready before Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner Capsule.

Space Shuttle Veterans

The two astronauts who went up in the Crew Dragon are both seasoned Space Shuttle veterans. Doug Hurley actually piloted the final Space Shuttle mission in 2011, aboard the Atlantis, while Robert Behnken is a former Chief of the Astronaut Office. They, and all individuals who had close contact with them, were tested twice for COVID-19 before the launch. They also spent the standard fortnight in quarantine, to make certain that they didn’t carry any illnesses onto the ISS.

The Magnificent Dragon II

The Crew Dragon is the human-rated capsule of the SpaceX Dragon II, and is the counterpart of the Cargo Dragon capsule. Capable of carrying up to seven passengers, it is launched from a Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket. During the May 30th launch, the Falcon 9 fired for two minutes, then dropped off and touched down on a barge floating in the Atlantic Ocean. At that point, a second rocket stage launched Hurley and Behnken into orbit.

The Falcon 9 and Crew Dragon are both reusable, which cuts their costs considerably, and SpaceX is believed to be charging NASA $55 million per seat. Boeing is expected to charge $90 million for a trip on their Starliner, which will also be able to carry seven people. SpaceX also plans to offer commercial scientists and private passengers tickets aboard the Crew Dragon. This will make it more financially beneficial and will ultimately help to keep NASA’s expenses down.

In a year that has brought incredible challenges to Planet Earth, a lot of people watched the latest space launch and welcomed the success as some long-overdue good news. Popular singer Kelly Clarkson performed The Star-Spangled Banner” in a prelaunch broadcast, which arguably drummed up as much US national pride as when the song is sung at the Super Bowl Final. Jim Bridenstine, NASA’s Administrator, said the flight would unite not only Republicans and Democrats, but people all across the world.

For Musk, the carrying of human passengers into space aboard the Dragon Crew is a personal triumph and the culmination of years of hard work. He has already rearticulated his belief in the need for a moon base as well as a settlement on Mars. This is only the beginning, Musk said, and he clearly has great plans for a future that he described as “super-exciting”.
