How To Play American Roulette

American Roulette is just one of three popular versions of Roulette seen in modern casinos around the globe. The others are European Roulette and French Roulette. Each is unique in its own way but some players prefer different versions for different reasons. Veteran gamblers usually know which is their preferred version of either a land-based or online Roulette. Let’s explore what makes American Roulette different from all the others.

The infamous double zero

What sets American Roulette apart from its chief competitor of European Roulette is the existence of the double zero pocket. This means that an American Roulette wheel has 38 divisions or numbers as opposed to European Roulette’s 37. These numbers span from 00/0 to 36. 1 to 36 are coloured in alternating red and black with the zero and double zero being green.

American Roulette first came into existence after the arrival of European Roulette in America. Casino owners who were not fond of the house’s lower odds with the single zero opted to add the double zero back in. The double zero had been removed when European Roulette was adapted from the original French version. The rule stuck and became a mainstay of what would come to be permanently known as American Roulette.

Taking a spin

The aim of every version of Roulette is for players to predict which pocket the Roulette ball will eventually land on. Players begin each round by placing bets on where they think the ball might end up.

A typical game of Roulette involves anywhere between 1 to 8 players. Betting begins once the dealer calls out “Place your bets.” Players then proceed to place their chips on the numbers they want to bet on. The dealer spins the Roulette wheel after bets have been placed. The dealer will then spin the Roulette ball in the opposite direction to the wheel. After that gravity takes over. Near the end of the spin the dealer will call out “No more bets” which means no more bets can be placed. Bets are tallied up once the wheel stops and the ball comes to rest in one of the pockets. Winning bets are paid out to the players while losing bets are kept by the house. The whole process then starts up again.

How to bet

There’s no one way to be in Roulette. A number of options are open to the player and each option differs in terms of their odds and payouts. There are two categories of bets, namely inside bets and outside bets.

Inside bets

Straight-up bets are made by placing chips on any single number. Straight-up bets have the smallest odds but the highest payout of 35 to 1.

Split bets are made by placing chips on the line dividing two numbers. The odds are slightly better than a straight-up bet which means a lower payout of 17 to 1.

Street bets are placed on the line at the end of a row and covers all three numbers in that row. The payout is 11 to 1.

Corner bets are placed where four numbers intersect and covers all four for a possible win. This means the payout is 8 to 1.

Line bets are placed at the intersection of two full rows and cover 6 numbers in total with a payout of 5 to 1.

Outside bets

Column bets are placed on the “2-1” square that sit at the end of the columns. These bets cover all the numbers in the column and pay out 2 to 1.

Dozen bets are placed on either the “1st 12”, “2nd 12”, or “3rd 12” box for a pay out of 2 to 1.

Players can also bet on colours, odds or evens, and lows or highs. There are special squares reserved for just such bets. The payout for each of these is 1/1. In the case of the ball landing on zero or double zero, the above outside bets are halved and returned to the players.
