The latest smartphones sure are impressive. They have displays that are indistinguishable from reality, smart sensors that tell you the humidity content of the air, download speeds so fast that megabytes are inconsequential nonsense, and they might even be capable of telling you the winning lottery numbers. There is only one really big downside. They happen to be extremely expensive. So much so that the average smartphone user is starting to ask if all the bells and whistles are necessary.
The short answer to this question is; probably not. Ask yourself just how many of the bells and whistles you really use, and if you wouldn’t be better off getting something a little cheaper. Don’t scoff too fast, because budget smartphones are probably a great deal better than you’re assuming.
Motorola aren’t Samsung or Apple, which is probably their biggest downfall. Which is to say; most consumers haven’t even given their phones a chance. The MOTO G5 is widely regarded as the best budget phone money can buy. With an HD screen, front and forward facing cameras, both of which are surprisingly decent, as well as a thumbprint scanner, there is little you could ask for in daily life that the device does not offer. The casing is also partly metal, offering a sturdy design.
The drawbacks are that the device does not have NFC, though you might ask yourself just how often you make use of this wireless technology. It also has a chipset that is perhaps not as fast as some of the new model phones. However, do keep in mind that the G6 is now out, and as soon as we review it, we’ll be letting you know if it’s a G5 killer.
MOTO E5 Plus
Even cheaper than the G5, the E5 Plus is another excellent budget phone. The screen is bigger than the G5, while still offering great resolution. Though, a little below HD. One of its biggest draw cards is the battery, which lasts a great deal longer than many phones on the market these days. For the price, you really won’t do much better than this gem of a handheld device.

MOTO E4 Plus
Motorola has the top 3 spots, which should tell you a lot. The E4 is obviously the older model of the E5, which more or less tells you everything you need to know. It has a slightly smaller screen, but the same battery that provides seemingly endless life. In short, if you want a battery that lasts for two days while still paying a fraction of the price of a big brand name, start here.
With similar specifications to the above E4 and E5; the Nokia 6 is another excellent deal. It offers an HD screen and fingerprint scanner, as well as having surprisingly good cameras. The downside is that the battery is not going to last as long as the above mentioned devices. Though, in terms of visual appeal, the Nokia 6 may just stand apart from the Motorola designs. So it’s a case of looking nice versus a two-day battery, really. We decided that battery life was more important, but you can make your own choice, of course.
Honor 9 Lite
Last on the list is another device that gets overlooked due to being an unknown brand; the Honor 9 Lite is certainly worth a look. Likewise looking great in terms of atheistic appeal, the Honor 9 brings a lot of bang for the price. Although, the device is noticeably more expensive than those above. Features include a full HD screen, fingerprint scanner, the latest version of the Android operating system, and dual cameras. The downsides are yet another battery that is a little limited in its lifespan, as well as a few reports that the camera doesn’t perform especially well in low light situations.
It’s hard to get through life these days without a smartphone, so we hope these options will help you save a little extra, while still getting all the features and functionality you require.
